In-Ear SpO2 for Classification of Cognitive Workload

Classification of cognitive workload promises immense benefit in diverse areas ranging from driver safety to augmenting human capability through closed loop brain computer interface. The is the most metabolically active organ body and increases its metabolic activity thus oxygen consumption with increasing demand. In this study, we explore feasibility in-ear SpO2 tracking. To end, preform assessment 8 subjects, based on an N-back task, whereby subjects are asked count remember number odd numbers displayed a screen 5 second windows. 2 3-back tasks lead either lowest median absolute or largest decrease all indicating robust measurable blood response increased workload. Using features derived pulse oximetry, including SpO2, rate respiration rate, were able classify 4 task categories, over epochs, mean accuracy 94.2%. Moreover, out 21 total features, 9 important for classification related features. findings suggest that measurements provide valuable information short time windows, which together small form factor new avenue real
